In reply to your YouTube video upload [06-02-2011] of The Jordan Harman Band doing “Compared to What”
Here’s a little history for you, Brad.
I grew up listening to “Compared to What” decades ago.
Eugene McDaniels wrote “Compared to What” in 1968 as a form of protest against the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Vietnam War, and all the other awful shit that was going on in America at the time, out there beyond Beaver Cleaver’s white picket fence.
Les McCann and Eddie Harris were the original performers, blowing the lid off the damn thing at the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzwerland) in 1969. So these boys here in this vid are doing a cover of a cover (which is not to discredit John Legend & the Roots by any means).
If you’re gonna do the music, know the music that you’re doing.
we are very aware of the history. We are covering John Legend The Roots version because we love R&B and are huge fans of those artist. Thanks for watching.
